History of NWSMTA 1969-70

The following teachers had played a part in my life. There are those of us who will remember Martha Auer, Verna Dean Roberts and Lola White.
In 1967-68, teachers were becoming certified by the state.
Ruth Petersen was a member in 1969-70. She taught my sister in law’s daughter. Ruth and Suzanne Hynek would go to national conventions together. Floss Edmondson, Delia Krueger, Jim Noland, Lyda Samuels, Elsie Beran, and Elinor Traeger, Wanda Hollensteiner were teachers who attended our meetings.
Carol Walgren and Vivian Pintacura are also members since 1969-70. Our first workshop was held in 1969 in Town Hall in Randhurst.
1968-69 Officers: Suzanne Hynek, President; Geraldine Grady, First Vice President and Program Chairman; Grace Garrett Co-Chairman of Programs; Verna Dean Roberts, Second Vice President and Membership Chairman; and Ruth Petersen, Recording Secretary and Publicity Chairman. Hostess was Lola White, Librarian Chairman was Joan Drolet and Scholarship Chairman was Maria Hoar.
In 1970, Constance won a full Competitive Talent Scholarship.
The teacher meeting was held downstairs at Randhust. Before there was Aim, there was Plateaus of Progress directed by Grace Garrett in 1970. Another meeting in 1970 had Pat Cavers hosting.
In April 1970, a teacher meeting was held at Karnes Music in Des Plaines. Harriet Jenkins was a hostess.
In May 1970, there was a teacher meeting at Lyon & Healy in Randhurst. The hostesses were Maria Hoar and Carol Stein.
June 1, 1970, Allison Nelson Neal, who gave a three day workshop, was recognized as Australia’s best know piano virtuoso, she was 7 years old. She played with every symphony orchestra on the continent. She studied for five years with Serkin and Horszowski.
Joan Drolet has been a member since 1969-70. Everyone loves her whether she is playing for a church service or whether she is at a teachers meeting.
In June 1970, there was a luncheon and installation of officers at the Golf Mill Shopping Center. I am glad our luncheons are more local.

In 1970-1971, scholarships were instituted to senior and junior divisions. The NWSMTA library also began in 1970-71.
About May or June 1971,the 3rd scholarship auditions happened.
1970-71, guidebooks were issued to teachers. It was a big blue binder filled with lots of information. I still have my big blue binder.
Feb. 1972, Norma Maki, Lois Zelk and Helen Velleur were members.
For 1972-73, Beverly Modlin, Marge Lantz, Martha Auer and Margaret Lindegard joined.
E.L. Lancaster was on the Harper College Faculty in 1973.
Feb. 1973 was the 3rd annual teachers recital presented by members of Northwest Suburban Chicago Area Group of ISMTA and MTNA. Jane Moseley was a participant.
In 1973, it was voted to have local dues of $5.00 Membership was approaching the 100 mark.
June 1973, the Northwest Area Group of teachers would go to the Chicago Area Group once a month. Carol Stein decided to set up programs for the small group of teachers and they joined the state and national for $6.00 a year.

Meetings were now going to be held at the Arlington Heights Memorial Library as of September 17, 1973. Post cards were mailed out to remind the members.
1972-1973, Mary Etian was a member.
1974, Jean Banta and Marge Lantz were members.
The North Shore Teachers Association was formed in 1974. They had about 25 members.
Between June 1974 to June 1975, some members formed the North Shore Area Group.
We started our year with 72 names in the yearbook and during the year, ten more names were added.
Two of our evening meetings were held at Harper College in the unfinished music building. Some meetings were held at the Arlington Heights Memorial Library.

Our first program was at Mary Ann Alexander's house, Sept. 16, 1974, featured David Appleby of Eastern IL. He played on a Beckstein.
Oct. 15, 1974, Harper College had a program about four hand music that was intermediate contemporary.
Nov. 19 Harper College had a recital by North Shore Members for our program.
Dec. 9 was a Christmas party at the home of Lola White.
Jan. 20, 1974, Janice Razaq did a program at the Arl. Hts. Memorial Library.
Feb. 17, Fred Kern from Northwestern University and Harper did a program at the Arl. Hts. Memorial Library, using pop to teach Keyboard Harmony, Theory and Improvising.
March 17, Madelyn Crail, a member of North Shore, gave a lecture recital on MacDowell at the Arl. Hts. Library.
April 21, Arl. Library, Larry Rast of Northern spoke on ornamentation in Baroque music.
May 19, Arl. Library, a recital was given by awards winning students.

Nov. 17 Recitals at Harper College. Nov. 19, 1974 our teachers performed at Harper College, Elsie Beran played Beethoven's Pathetique sonata, Elenore Bonebrake performed Chopin Etude Opus 25, No. 1, Mary Etian played Chopin's Fantasy Impromptu Op. 66, Marge Lantz performed a duet. Verna Dean Roberts performed a vocal duet. It was the 5th annual teachers recital.
Jan. 19, 1975, there was a recital at Harper College featuring the students of Joan Drolet, Margaret Lindegard, Vivian Pintacura, Lola White and Lois Zelk, Pat Cavers, Floss Edmondson, Geraldine Grady, Jim Noland and Verna Dean Roberts.

Sept. 15, 1975, Margaret Kerr, state examination coordinator, gave a program at the Arl. Heights Library, Questions and Answers about the Syllabus Examinations.
October 20, 1975, Wanda Hollensteiner had a recital in her Barrington home of NSMTA members. Shirley Weimer played Mendelssohn's Duet from Songs without Words. Janice Rackow performed Debussy Prelude from Suite Bergemasque. Ruth Petersen sang and Lola White accompanied her. Mary Etian performed Enzeli by Spendiarian. Verna Dean Roberts sang and Madelyn Crail accompanied her. Grace Garrett did a duet by Brahms,Variations on a Theme by Schuman Opus 23. Elinore Traeger performed Moods and she was the composer. Madelyn Crail performed Etude Appassionata by Wolff.Virginia Lootens performed Chopin's Allegro Maestoso Sonata. Mary Etian and Janice Rackow had their picture in the newspaper as performers.
Nov. 17, 1975, Dr. James Lyke and Nancy Hartman performed Selected Duets for Children at the Arl. Hts. Memorial Library.

March 1976, the national convention was in Dallas, Texas.
March 21, 1976, NWSMTA Bicentennial Recital at Harper College. April 19, 1976, Lydia Smutney Sterba, gave a program at the Arl. Hts. Library, Short Cuts for Good Memorizing.
April 25, 1976, Elvina Truman Pearce did the workshop for 3 days in Randhurst.
Ruby Hawley died in 1976.
The music sales was new for the group.
May 2, 1976, the awards pieces for the Jr. Division were Haydn: Allegro from Divertimento in C Major; Brahms Waltz, Opus 39, No. 15; Tcherepnin, Bagatelle, Opus 5, No. 3; Senior Division: Scarlatti, Sonata No. 3 in Book; Rachmaninoff, Prelude in g, Opus 23, No. 5; Ravel Sonatine, Second movement. All music was carried by Andrews-Edwards in Arl. Hts.
May 16, 1976, Popular Music Styling was held at Harper College. The recital committee was Jim Noland and Margaret Lindegard. Students of the following teachers performed at Harper College: 1:30 Vivian Pintacura, Beverly Peterson, Lila Malecki, Floss Edmondson, Geraldine Grady; 2:45 Rita Choice, Verna Dean Roberts, Delia Krueger, Jim Noland, Ilse Schmidt and Margaret Lindegard.

June 1, 1976, Luncheon and installation of officers at the Old Orchard Country Club.

June Murray was the mimeograph operator.
In 1976, we had a membership of 76.
Harper College provided space for Theory testing for the syllabus examinations that replaced Plateaus of Progress. There were 75 students who did the theory testing and 100 students who did the performance.

Sept. 20, 1976, Laurence Morton from Bob Jones University, Greenville, South Carolina, gave a program at the Arl. Hts. Library about the Piano Music of Heitor Villa-Lobos.
Oct. 18, 1976, there was a recital by the NSMTA members at the First Baptist Church in Palatine. Mary Etian played a Toccata in g minor by Bach. Verna Dean Roberts sang. Marie Illig played Schubert Sonata in A Major, 120. Ruth Petersen played Notturno by Respighi. Mary Mennicke played a fugue in g minor on the organ by Bach. Jeanne Banta played a Schubert Impromptu in A-flat, Op. 142. Linda Heuer played Pappilons, Op. 2 by Schumann. Madelyn Crail played Rush Hour in Hong Kong by Chasins.
Nov. 15, 1976, Ludmilla Lazar gave a program at the Arl. Hts. Library about the Neglected Piano Repertoire in the Student Recital.
Dec. 6, 1976 Christmas Party at the home of Mary Etian.
Jan. 1977, there was an Independent Music Teachers Forum at the Arl. Hts. Library. The moderator was Madelyn Crail. The panelists were Martha Auer, Harriet Jenkins, Verna Dean Roberts and Carol Stein.
Feb. 21, 1977, Fred Kern from Northwestern and a NSMTA member, gave a program at the Arl. Hts. Library about the classical influence of American popular music at the turn of the century including ragtime, slides and commentary.
March 21, 1977, Clara Szekely Rolland, Nationl Academy of Music from Champaign gave a program at the Arl. Hts. Library about Motion Study in Piano Playing.
April 18, 1977 The Elgin Symphony Trio for violin, cello and piano featuring Bernice Bloom did a program of chamber music at The First Baptist Church in Palatine with commentary of the materials and the problems of ensemble playing.
May 16, 1977 there was a recital of NSMTA awards competition winners at the Arl. Hts. Library.
June 1, 1977, there was a luncheon and installation of officers at the Old Orchard Country Club.

October 20, 1975, Wanda Hollensteiner had a recital in her Barrington home of NSMTA members. Shirley Weimer played Mendelssohn's Duet from Songs without Words. Janice Rackow performed Debussy Prelude from Suite Bergemasque. Ruth Petersen sang and Lola White accompanied her. Mary Etian performed Enzeli by Spendiarian. Verna Dean Roberts sang and Madelyn Crail accompanied her. Grace Garrett did a duet by Brahms,Variations on a Theme by Schuman Opus 23. Elinore Traeger performed Moods and she was the composer. Madelyn Crail performed Etude Appassionata by Wolff.Virginia Lootens performed Chopin's Allegro Maestoso Sonata. Mary Etian and Janice Rackow had their picture in the newspaper as performers.

Harper College provided space for Theory testing for the syllabus examinations that replaced Plateaus of Progress. There were 75 students who did the theory testing and 100 students who did the performance.

Jeanne Banta played a Schubert Impromptu in A-flat, Op. 142. Linda Heuer played Pappilons, Op. 2 by Schumann. Madelyn Crail played Rush Hour in Hong Kong by Chasins.
